LifeWay announces new site, building plans

LifeWay Christian Resources plans to relocate its downtown headquarters to a new building to be built at the Capitol View mixed-use project site in the North Gulch.

LfeWay President Thom Rainer and Nashville Mayor Megan Barry made the public announcement February 4 at a news conference on the 2.7-acre site. It is located approximately five blocks from the current corporate headquarters.

Earlier, LifeWay trustees, meeting February 1-2, approved a recommendation for the construction of the new headquarters. The recommendation included the authorization to enter into a contract with Gresham, Smith and Partners for the design of the facility and “to execute other contracts and documents as necessary for LifeWay to complete the new campus. “

“We are designing a building that will reflect LifeWay’s culture both now and for the future,” Rainer told trustees. “it will be a building conducive to collaboration, innovation and fun.” He also applauded the numerous hotels and restaurants in the Gulch that could be utilized for conferences and other meetings.

The sale of the 15-acre current LifeWay headquarters was completed in late 2015 for $125 million. At the news conference Rainer said, “it speaks volumes about downtown Nashville that so many were interested in our property.”

Mayor Barry acknowledged LifeWay had other options besides downtown. “We are excited they have chosen to remain a part of the fabric of Nashville.

Rainer thanked Metro Nashville government for its $3.5 million financial commitment to go toward infrastructure, sidewalks and street work around the building. He estimated the new facility for 1,100 employees will be complete by late 2017 or early 2018. In the meantime, LifeWay employees are located in two buildings at the current location.

The LifeWay project would mark the next chapter for Capitol View, a 32-acre development being overseen by property owner Northwest Mutual and development partners Boyle Investment Co. and Northwood Ravin.

The following is a message from Dr. Rainer sent to all employees.
I am excited to share with you we have signed a purchase agreement for the 2.7 acre site in Capitol View that I shared with you in December. We are doing our due diligence on the property, but I am still hopeful, if everything goes well, we will be able to move into our new approximately 250,000 square foot building late next year or early 2018.

We will make a public announcement at a news conference with Nashville Mayor Megan Barry. And, we’re making the announcement on the new site at 11th Avenue and Clinton Street, which is just under I-65 from Marathon Village and Antique Archeology.

You probably remember the most prominent feature of the 32 acre Capitol View development right now is the 16-story HCA headquarters building which is under construction but will be joined by a mix of new retail space, apartments, restaurants, hotels, a movie theater, a greenway, and possibly a park – all new construction surrounding what we hope will be LifeWay’s new building. Capitol View will provide the amenities LifeWay and our guests and visitors will need well into the 21st Century.

Thank you for your patience and understanding during this consolidation as we look to the future together.

In His service,

Thom S. Rainer
